birds

birds are part of the group animalia. birds are vertebrate animals. birds are the only animals that have feathers. birds are passerines:
  •  feet made to hold on things
  • 60% of all birds are passerines
chicks are helpless.

feathers:
  •  keep birds warm
  • filopeo - tail
preen: so that the feathers can fall off and grow new ones

birds have breeding seasons.
  • colours change and some get new feathers eg. a long tail 
beaks:
  • cracker- seed eaters
  • shredder- bird of prey
  • chisel - insects
  • probe- nectar
  • strainer- small fish,small water animals (duck)
  • spear- fish (king fisher)
  • tweaser- insects
  • swis army knife- eat anything (secretary bird )

weekend 25-27 march

we did welcoming till 9pm.it went well. Saturday we did game drives and learn a lot about the animals and nature. it went well and we feel more confident to do our own game drives. we did entertainment and worked with the kids and painted their faces. Sunday we went on game drives and worked at entertainment again we painted faces and let the kids watch movies when it rained we watched 3 movies and the kids enjoyed it very much. we would like to learn more about nature and the animals. the weekend went well and we cant wait for our next working weekend.

mammals

we learned about the mammals and interesting facts about them. how to great the people and to tell them about the rules of a game drive or trail . you need to be sure about your facts. the more you know the more confident you will be on the drive/trail.safety is very important in the bush and you always need a radio. 

Eland: its the biggest antelope you get. the males and females have horns.
  •   they can jump 2 meters high
  • when they move in thick bush the front one will click its hoofs for the others to know where they are
Impala:

  • they can leap 3 meters 
  • only males have horns 
  • the name impala comes from the Zulu language 
Blesbok:
  • males and females have horns
  • they have maggots in their nose that cleans it that's why they shake their heads up and down.
  • the baby blesbok have a black face to catch the suns heat because they lose heat quick. 
bluewildebeest:

  • males and females have horns
  • the females face are more brown and males are black faces
  • they graze with zebra for protection
giraffe:

  • longest land mammal
  • males has no hair on the horns and females does
  • the heart weighs 12kg
  • the heart is the size of an soccer ball
njala:

  • the baby njala males are the same colour  as the females so that the male dont kick him out of the group,he thinks its a female
  • only males have horns
zebra:

  • they have their own bacteria that keeps them healthy and bloated 
  • the baby's eat their moms dung when they get born to get the same bacteria that the mom has
duiker:

  • the only buck that eats meat
